Floating offshore wind unlocks sites that fixed-bottom turbines cannot reach. But developers here face real barriers. Costs run high. Logistics are complex. Supply chains are still maturing. LIGHTWIND’s first market analysis set out to understand these barriers, and who is best placed to solve them.
Have your say before the analysis moves forward
Before we go further, there’s a way to shape where this analysis heads next. Euro-Funding has launched a stakeholder survey. It’s open to developers, OEMs, supply chain actors, investors, and policymakers in offshore wind. The survey takes a few minutes. It feeds straight into the next phase of LIGHTWIND’s market work.
What makes floating wind developers different
Floating platforms reach deeper waters. Bottom-fixed turbines cannot follow them there. That access comes at a cost. LIGHTWIND’s market analysis found that floating projects face the sector’s toughest cost, logistics, and supply chain constraints.
That’s why floating wind developers emerged from the analysis as the segment where a drivetrain concept like LIGHTWIND’s could make the most difference. LIGHTWIND designed the technology around these exact constraints, not as a general upgrade for offshore wind as a whole. We touched on this same theme in our look at deep-water deployment during EU Green Week.
Why OEMs matter more than you might expect
The analysis also confirmed something less obvious. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), not developers, are the critical channel for bringing new drivetrain technology to market. OEMs integrate components like this into the turbines they sell. Their buy-in is a precondition for any new technology reaching the water at scale.
That finding shapes LIGHTWIND’s next steps. The analysis identified Europe and North America as the most relevant near-term markets. These findings now feed into the project’s market introduction roadmap. They will help the consortium prioritise partnerships where its drivetrain concept can make the most difference.
Where this is heading
These are preliminary conclusions. LIGHTWIND treats the market study as a living document. The team will keep testing and updating it as the project progresses, starting with what the stakeholder survey above brings in.
